About Friends of APOD

Friends of APOD (FAPOD) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Maryland.

In 2014, we started Friends of APOD as an all-volunteer organization to provide financial support for Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD), a beautiful and informative astronomy website conceived and edited by Robert Nemiroff and Jerry Bonnell. APOD currently has no system to accept donations from its fans; we have set up FAPOD to fill that gap.

Funds raised by FAPOD will, among other things, help finance travel to represent APOD at conferences, make APOD presentations, and participate in APOD planning meetings. NASA supports APOD through a grant; FAPOD will help fund non-NASA-supported APOD efforts.

Please note that FAPOD is a separate organization from APOD; we have no input over what images appear on APOD and individual contributions to FAPOD are blind to APOD. (We do not reveal how much any individual donated; see exception.)

We are indebted to an anonymous Wookiee for hosting this site at no charge and to Judy Schmidt for her design and management of it.

Back in October of 2013 I wrote a short article of appreciation under unusual circumstances. Enjoy it, perhaps again, as you are so deserving!

Also reminds me that we know very little about this universe we live in but also enforces the appreciation I have for this planet (and/or plane of existence) I live on.
